Protective Effect of UV-induced Arthrospira Platensis (Spirulina) Mutant on UV-B Irradiated Human Dermal Fibroblasts Injury

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the protective effect of UV-induced Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) mutant and its possible mechanisms on UV-B irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) injury. Ultraviolet rays were irradiated in order to induce the mutation of A. platensis and 5 strains were selected with respect to better growth. Among the 5 extracts of A. platensis mutants, UV1-2 mutant extract showed significant increase of type I procollagen synthesis and inhibition of MMP-1 expression. Transcription factors NF-¥êB and AP-1 were downregulated by UV1-2 in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, UV1-2 mutant extract blocked MAPKs pathway, which is upstream signalling of NF-¥êB activation. This study suggests that UV1-2 mutant extract can be used as a therapeutic agent to prevent UV-B induced skin photoaging.
